2023 Youth Mission Project
Hollywood, SC |
We are thrilled to announce preparations for the return of Youth Mission Project (YMP) in 2023. This mission project is designed for Shandon UMC students who have completed by this summer any of the 9th -12th grades. We will serve together from Sunday, July 16 through Saturday, July 22 to serve the Petersfield Community in Hollywood, SC. (Please note that we will meet at the church to pack for the trip on the morning of Saturday, July 15.)
We hope your student will join us as we take on home repair projects from roofing, painting, cleaning, and leading a VBS for the community as well as worshiping each evening with our group.
Registration is a commitment by the student to participate in the full work week of YMP. The cost of this trip is $175, which is used to pay for lodging, meals, and other expenses for our group. A $100 deposit is required at the time of registration and the remaining balance is due May 14.
All students that participate must attend one of the pre-trip Parent/Participant meetings with their parent/guardian. The two options for these meetings (Sunday, April 23rd @ 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, May 7th @ 4:00 p.m.) are listed in the registration as well.
This year we will partner with Home Works of America as they assist us in identifying homes in need of repair and vetting homeowners. Home Works will also support us logistically with regard to materials and equipment. Each student and his/her parents will need to sign a waiver as required by Home Works at the aforementioned Parent/Participant meeting.
Wesley Memorial UMC in Hollywood, SC, will be our host church offering us accommodations for the week in their gymnasium. Their gymnasium facility includes a kitchen, restrooms with showers, and space that we will divide into areas to sleep males separate from females as well as designating a separate dining area for our group. Participants will provide their air mattresses for the week. More details will be shared at the Parent/Participant meeting but participants should anticipate this experience to be one that requires a servant’s heart, joyful attitude, and patience as well as a concern for those whom we serve as well as those with whom we serve.
Space for YMP is limited and registrations at this time are only accepted from Shandon UMC students.
Additional questions or concerns may be directed to Andy Morris, Director of Student Ministry, at amorris@shandon-umc.org or 803-256-8383.
