CLOTHING DRIVE FOR K-12 in Richland One & Two

EMS Closet is a registered non-profit in South Carolina that fills in the gap of government social services. Only three of the basic four needs (food, energy, housing) are supported by the governmental programs. EMS closet fills the gap of the clothing need as lack of clothing is one of the top 10 reasons children miss school. In addition, children and teens who are clothing insecure are more likely to be bullied at school and suffer social anxiety.

A local consortium of churches has begun to meet this need through EMS closet. Shandon UMC has also been asked to help. To meet this task, Outreach is hosting a new and/or like new (emphasis on new) clothing drive for all school age children. The need is great for K-12 in Richland One and Two Districts.

The clothing drive will officially begin August 1 and run through the end of September. Here are some of the most needed items: underwear, socks, winter coats, shoes, hoodies for middle school/high school youth, knee length athletic shorts for middle school/high school youth, athletic pants, jeans. (Hint: if you don’t know what to buy, ask a middle school or high school youth!) All clothing for children and youth K-12 is welcome so long as it is new or like new.

Please bring all new or like-new clothing and shoes to the church and place them in the “Donation Station” outside Rev. Shannon Bullion’s office (Bruner Building). Clothing and shoe donations can also be mailed directly to the church to the attention of Rev. Shannon Bullion. Monetary donations can be given by checks payable to Shandon UMC. Please write “EMS Clothing Drive” in the notes line. You can also give online at shandon-umc.org/give and select “EMS Clothing Drive” as the fund.

Should you have any questions, or if your Sunday School class or group would like to support this mission financially instead, please email sbullion@shandon-umc.org.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Guess what is finally able to happen again? Our Shandon (Habitat for Humanity) Build is scheduled for Saturday, September 10, 2022, from 8:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m. It has been a while, due to COVID, but we finally are able to get it on the schedule again! The location of the build is 215 Clinton Street, Columbia, 29229. All volunteers will need to register online, bring the completed volunteer waiver to the site with them, and review the construction guidelines. All volunteers must also wear closed-toed shoes, clothing that can get dirty, and bring plenty of water. No special skills are required. Habitat will be on hand to help us build a home.
