The Well@Home: A Way In the Wilderness (Is. 43:19)

Ladies, 

Welcome to the online registration for The Well@Home, our one-day women’s retreat on the campus of Shandon UMC, on Saturday, September 18.  Our theme is Way in the Wilderness (Is. 43:19), and we look forward to the leadership of Rev. Dawn Hyde, Senior Pastor at Downtown Church in Columbia, as she guides us in a deeper and more personal understanding of this scripture.   

We invite women of all ages to join us for this day apart as we enjoy fellowship, food, music, laughter, quiet time, reflection, and the study of God’s Word in communion with our Lord.  

The cost is $20 and includes lunch and materials. The dress will be casual, and friends are welcome.  Space is limited. 

Retreat Schedule: 
8:30 a.m. –  Check-in (receive name tag and materials) 
9:00 a.m.  – Session 1
Break 
Session 2 
Noon –   Lunch 
1:15 p.m. –  Closing Worship 
2:15 p.m. –   Dismissal 

Upon completing the registration, you will receive an email confirming your registration. Two weeks prior to our event, you’ll receive an email with event details, and we will email you a reminder in the days prior to the retreat as well.

Women of all ages are welcome to attend and invite your friends.  Renew your Spirit, Rest your Body, Nurture your Faith, and Encourage your Discipleship. Join us as we make time to reflect on God’s presence in our lives and recommit to making time for Him each day.  **Check-in will begin at 4:00 p.m. Our retreat will begin with dinner on Friday evening and will close following our worship service on Sunday morning.

2023 Retreat Registration Fees:

 Single Occupancy $ 440.00 per person 
 Double Occupancy $ 315.00 per person

Room price includes lodging, 5 meals, retreat center amenities, all materials and participation in the retreat sessions.  Participants are responsible for arranging their own roommates and transportation.


Payment Deadlines, Refunds, Cancellations and Substitutions
A $150 non-refundable deposit is required at the time of registration. The final balance is due by November 1, 2022.  Cancellations received before November 1, 2022 are refundable, less a the deposit and 3% credit card processing fee, if applicable. Cancellations after November 1, 2022 are non-refundable. Substitutions may be made until December 15, 2022. Registrations may be transferred to another attendee. Substitutions are allowed using the following guidelines: The substituting attendee must provide an email from the person whose place they are taking authorizing the substitution. The substituting attendee should pay the original attendee directly, since payment will have already been made to the Shandon United Methodist Church. Register for the retreat by completing the registration form and paying the $150 non-refundable deposit with a credit card or check in person.

Oct. 2: Open Gym for students starts at 4:30 p.m., followed by MYF from 5:00-6:30 p.m. At MYF, we will eat dinner, play group games, and start our new series on friendships! On this night of MYF, we will discuss how the Bible guides us in choosing our friends.

MORE Justice “House Meeting”

Player Hall - Dunn-Smith #3 | 4:00 p.m.

Please join us for the annual MORE Justice “House Meeting” which will be held at the church on Sunday, October 2 at 4:00 p.m. in Player Hall. We will listen to each other and share our concerns about our local community. Shandon UMC participates in the community-wide justice ministry known as MORE Justice (Midlands Organized Response for Equity and Justice). This ministry addresses local problems identified in conversations in over 25 congregations in the Columbia area. We are entering the sixth year of involvement with this important ministry, and each other and share our concerns about our community. Childcare will be available that afternoon from 4:00–6:00 p.m. (registration is required at shandon-umc.org/register if you desire to use childcare services). We hope to see you there!!

Blessing of the Animals

Shandon UMC - Courtyard | 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

In honor of St. Francis, we hold The Blessing of the Animals every year. This year it will be on Sunday, October 2, beginning promptly at 3:00 p.m. by the fountain in the Courtyard. All animals are welcome.

All animals will receive a certificate of blessing and a medallion to go on their collar (if applicable).

All pet friends should be on a leash or in a cage or carrier.

Broadway Showtunes & More

Dunn-Smith Courtyard | 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

On Sunday, October 9, 6:00–7:00 p.m., bring a lawn chair and join us for this outdoor concert to enjoy some of your favorite Broadway hits. Our vocalists, Matthew Chesnutt, Bruce Isley, AnaPlayer Murray, Lindsay Anne McCall, Owen Connolly, and Anna Flynn will sing some of your favorite show tunes, and more! This event is sponsored by the Older Adult Ministries and Music & Arts Ministry.

The show will be held in the courtyard between the DuBose and Dunn-Smith Buildings. Everyone is invited to attend. Light refreshments will be provided by our Connections Ministry. The concert will be live-streamed and can be viewed at: shandon-umc.org/live.

Students Journey Weekend – Fall Retreat

Asbury Hills |

If you’ve ever experienced the beauty and wonder of Asbury Hills, you’ll know this is a weekend experience that should not be missed! This 7th-12th grade retreat at Asbury Hills is the weekend of October 21–23. During this Fall Retreat, our students will be led through games by the Asbury Hills staff; they will hear worship from the last retreat worship leader Andrew Doolittle and teaching from a guest speaker. Our faith isn’t a one-stop ride, it’s a journey with our Savior. This is a weekend to remind us to walk this journey with Him. Something special happens on weekends like these, so don’t miss registration.

All Saints Sunday Concert – “Requiem” by Gabriel Fauré

Sanctuary | 4:00 p.m.

Join us for an All Saints Sunday Concert by the combined choirs of Shandon UMC, Washington Street UMC, Trenholm Road UMC, and Main Street UMC on Sunday, November the 6 at 4:00 p.m. The Concert will feature Gabriel Faure’s Requiem performed in the Sanctuary of the Shandon UMC located at 3407 Devine Street.  Nicholas Shumate will conduct the choirs and Debbie Bauer will assist at the organ.  This program will be presented in memory of church members who have died since last All Saints Sunday.  Everyone is invited to attend.

Southern Christmas Show

Meet at Shandon UMC | Depart at 8:30 a.m.

This show is one of the top holiday events in the Southeast.  It has over 400-holiday merchants, gifts, decorations, music, and food galore.  Start your holiday shopping, or enjoy the holiday atmosphere with friends.  The Shandon bus will depart Shandon UMC on Friday, November 11 at 8:30 a.m. and return around 5:00 p.m.  Space is limited to 14. The cost is $15 per person.

Allen Grant for Students

Financial Assistance for Students: The Allen Committee is now accepting grant applications for the 2022 fall academic semester from students in college, technical and professional schools who are members of Shandon UMC or students of Epworth.

Although the financial amount of Allen Grants may vary from year to year, it is presently contemplated that initially such awards will be no more than $1,000 each but such amount may from time to time be smaller or greater. At the discretion of the committee, multiple awards may be made in each calendar year, depending upon the size of the Allen Educational Fund that year, the financial need of the applicant, and other considerations determined by the committee. Shandon members and Epworth students may apply for such awards to the Allen Fund Committee of the JOY Class on our website.

The deadline to submit an application for the 2023 spring academic semester is November 15, 2022.  Please visit shandon-umc.org/allenfund to apply.
